Mental Weeds

Mental Weeds is a self-narrated video about forming a connection with the land around you, represented by a mundane, tedious activity: pulling weeds. The phrase β€œI pull at the Earth, and the Earth pulls back at me” is spoken, repeated, and layered over itself, creating a tension-building audio. Brown hands pull up weeds and other undesirable greenery with increasing intensity, and the constant reiteration of labor and sound evokes a form of call-and-response rooted in the history of spiritual and oral traditions of the African diaspora.
